So here’s the deal.

I really hoped to have better news to post here, but the short version is, I have been incapacitated in one way or another  – with an L5 disc injury for several months, then with vertigo for four months, then with various health crises relating to my chronic illnesses,  and now again with the same L5 disc – since last December. In addition, almost all of my core team is now employed full time, in school full time, or had to move several hours away, so they’re no longer capable of coming over on a weekly basis to assist. Even if I was capable of doing what I need to do, I still wouldn’t have had the team required to help me bring my visions to reality.

So I can’t do a Haunt this year...

Frolic’s Haunt 2018 is cancelled due to weather.

We’re crushed, to put it lightly. We’ve been working every week since last November toward this year’s Haunt. We’ve made costumes, worked on our miniature village, created props, designed scenes, and did a million other tasks. Actors were trained and ready to go. Support staff were found. We did everything we needed to and we were all looking forward to it, just as I know our guests were.

But then heavy rains were predicted (80% chance of rain every hour we would be open). So we put together a backup plan of using large tents. It wouldn’t have been as good an experience, but at least it would still have allowed the event to go on.

But they’re now predicting winds of up to 45km/h Saturday evening as well as the rain...

Three days until Haunt day!

Registration has been open to everyone for the past week and those registrations have been coming in! Several of our most in-demand time slots are close to full, and 5 PM time slot is full. If you want to attend I urge you to sign up ASAP. (Once we hit our capacity for a half-hour time slot, I remove it from the selectable list on our Reservations system and anyone wanting to attend has to choose a different, available time slot. If there’s a half-hour available in the drop-down list, that time still has space...

Frolic’s Haunt is coming!

Mark your calendars! Frolic’s Haunt registration is now open if you or someone in your group has a disability. (Registration for non-disabled individuals, or groups without any disabled members*, will open in mid-October.) At this time I’m not directly linking the Reservations page because I want to keep it limited to the disability community, but if you or someone in your group qualifies for early registration, please contact me and I’ll send you the direct link.

Also our Haunt 2018 poster is now live!

* As a disabled person myself, I use Identity-First Language (disabled person) for a number of reasons, including that our disabilities are nothing to be ashamed of.

Image description: the flyer has a haunted house and grinning jack-o-lanterns on it, in a dark palette. The text reads, "Come get spooked at... Frolic's Haunt". The next lines read, "Saturday October 27th, 2018, 5 PM to 9 PM". The next lines read, "Free, North Toronto, All ages welcome. Fully wheelchair- and disabled-accessible. For more info, visit FrolicsHaunt.com".

Early September update

Less than two months remain until our next event, on Saturday, October 27th. The Frolic’s Haunt volunteer crew has been busy! Unfortunately this year some of our major volunteers have moved, gotten new jobs, or otherwise been unable to continue with their volunteering with Frolic’s. That being the case, we’ve decided to shift our format this year and try something new that requires fewer year-round volunteers. Instead of having the single walk-through Haunt as we did last year, this year we’re trying a community fair-style format, where we’ll have various activity booths and areas set up. Actors will be moving around at large on the property, interacting with visitors. We feel this format has a number of advantages over the previous walk-through Haunt:

1) It provides a range of activities,...

The premiere was amazing!

DSC_0296Last night some of the Frolic’s Haunt crew made it out to the premiere of our documentary, “Frolic’s Haunt”, at the Inside Out film festival. We came dressed up and ready to party, and we had a great time! It was amazing getting to share our message of accessibility and inclusiveness with the audience. I’m so proud of everyone that was involved in making this project a reality, from the filmmakers Elizabeth Last and Krissy Myers, to our core team (Kat, Christina, Clara, Liz) that help me prepare year-round, to all our other volunteers who put their time, love, and energy into Frolic’s Haunt. I couldn’t do this without all of you!

Frolic’s is at Inside Out!

Last year, a documentarian asked to cover Frolic’s Haunt. We agreed, and the footage the documentary team shot that night became a short documentary called “Frolic’s Haunt”. I am enormously pleased to announce that the documentary has been accepted to the Inside Out Film Festival! We’re part of the The Truth Is Out There shorts program, to be shown in Cinema 2 at the Bell TIFF Lightbox.

I am so excited that our message about accessibility is going to reach such a large audience, and it may go on to be shown at other film festivals as well; we’re already getting inquiries from film festivals on the other side of the world...

Frolic’s Haunt 2018 awards

Lots of exciting things are happening around here! We’ve been h27907814_10155079025962260_2816727500875565563_oard at work on FH2018 since last November. We’re fundamentally changing the way Frolic’s is running this year, as we realized we wanted something much more interactive for our visitors to experience. Our core mission of keeping everything fully accessible is staying the same, but this year there will be a lot more to see and do! I’ll share more details about that later (and we have a very exciting announcement coming up on May 4), but right now I want to address something new that we’re doing for the crew that helps make FH run. This year we’re doing awards for our top volunteers, to thank them for their time and effort.

Manhattan Trophies was kind enough to donate two trophies and a medal, as well as the engraving on all, in s...

Haunt 2017 is done.

Tonight was amazing. We had nearly two hundred attendees, including many kids and adults with accessibility needs. We had kids that were so excited they were shaking, including kids in wheelchairs who had never been to a Haunt before. There were so many smiles from kids and parents afterward.

Our high-school actors who were struggling so hard during the Actor Orientations, mortified just to try and make a goofy sound in front of other people, soon were working even when they were supposed to be off-shift, because they were having so much fun scaring people and they didn’t want to stop.

This was the first year for Frolic’s Haunt. We were starting from scratch and there was so much to do, and with our amazing team, we made it happen.

My two Head Ghouls, Christina and Kat, put in untold hou...
